TAKE A DRIVE TOWARD BEND, OREGON UP STATE HIGHWAY 22!
The alder leaves are changing, rapidly, and it is time to enjoy the North Santiam Canyon before the snow flies. Here is a handy sketch map of the journey. The town of Sisters is 120 miles east and Bend is another 20 miles further.
Detroit Lake is 50 miles distant from Interstate 5. Marion Forks is up at 2800 feet in elevation and another 20 miles past Detroit. The Lake level is low now, with the Valley getting ready for the Fall rains, that just started last week. A convenient rest area is about 4 miles east of Mill City (or about 2 miles past Gates). Stop in Detroit for gas and snacks or at one of the two restaurants for coffee and a meal. Kids will like a quick stop at the Marion Forks Fish Hatchery before going up to Hoodoo Mountain in the Santiam Pass. Watch the State Highway Department work like beavers as they prepare their snow removal equipment and road sanding stockpiles for winter.
